đď¸ CAUGHT ON FILM: Luton Town 1-0 Portsmouth
Sarah Kelly reflects on Lutonâs 1-0 victory against Portsmouth with the help of her trusty film camera for the latest edition of âCaught on Filmâ.
A lot has changed since we last won a game. A new manager, new signings and a derby day defeat. We neednât dwell on that.
A big factor of frustration for me this season was seeing a lack of the fighting spirit that propelled us up the leagues in the first place. The losing mentality we all assumed we would shake off upon relegation back to the Championship unfortunately had its claws dug in.
I donât want to get too ahead of myself and look like an idiot in a few weeks time but it looked like a flicker of that desire had returned against Portsmouth.
The long awaited appearance of Makosso appears to have been worth the wait, with a solid cameo against Watford followed up by keeping Murphy quiet on Saturday. Winning a physical battle to usher the ball out in the first half and then geeing up those sat in the Kenny, combined with a kiss of the badge in the lap after the game has presented us with something to hold on to; someone to root for. That kind of fight and scrappy spirit is exactly what is needed in a relegation battle and, I donât know about you, but itâs given me a new sense of hope.
Along with Christ impressing on his home debut, it was the second coming of Kal Naismith that added fuel to the fire (an unfortunately brief moment of joy), filling the shoes of a leader at the back that weâve been missing since Lockyer, putting his body on the line and a few classy touches sprinkled in between. Jordan Clark who has had a fair amount of criticism this season but has not once hidden, Walsh putting his two moments of madness behind him to pull the strings in the middle. It might not be over yet.
It wasnât an overall performance that set the world alight granted, but it was a desperately needed three points. Thereâs still a fair way to go but if the players show the fight that makosso has shown is there and we keep Naismith fit, then perhaps the fat lady can stay on vocal rest at the end of the season.
It all felt so optimistic. At least for a weekâŚ
